Carlson Tsui is a postdoctoral researcher with the research group of Professor Axel Kallies. He completed his PhD with Professor Facundo Batista at the Francis Crick Institute, UK, in 2018 before joining the Doherty Institute in 2019. Carlson studies chronic CD8 T cell activity and response to immune checkpoint blockade using models of chronic infection and cancer.

Carlson’s work covers multiple aspects in T and B cell biology, including immunometabolism, antigen receptor signalling, membrane cytoskeleton organisation, plasma cell differentiation, chronic T cell response and T cell exhaustion. His career is highlighted by multiple publications in leading journals such as Nature, Immunity, Cell and Science. His most recent work led to the discovery of a transcriptionally defined population of precursor exhausted T cells that are indispensable for the maintenance of chronic T cell responses in viral infection. Moreover, they are critical for fuelling the proliferative burst upon immune checkpoint inhibition, a fast-growing immunotherapeutic technique for cancer treatment. His work is supported by the University of Melbourne, NHMRC and CCV. Recently, he has been awarded the prestigious DECRA from ARC (from 2024).
