Dr Leonardo Arpesella is an Allergy and Clinical Immunology physician, currently pursuing a PhD in Professor Jose Villadangos' lab. His focus lies in investigating Dendritic Cells (DCs), particularly exploring the range of activation these cells undergo by using mixed bone marrow chimeric mice to discern the differences between classical and bystander activation pathways within DCs.

  • Key Achievements
    • Leonardo achieved his medical degree in Italy and completed his specialised training in Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2022. Before joining the lab, he was granted European Fellowships for research conducted in both Switzerland and Germany. In Switzerland, he focused on exploring the immunosuppressant potential of mesenchymal stromal cells at the Dr Dudli lab. In Germany, under the guidance of Professor Marta Rizzi, he delved into investigating the role of B cells in autoimmune and immunodeficient diseases.

Jose’s group combines immunology, biochemistry and cell biology to study how the adaptive immune system detects pathogens and cancer, a process called Antigen Presentation. Their research is applicable to vaccine development, treatment of critically ill patients and the fight against cancer.
