WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance

Laboratory diagnosis and surveillance

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance supports the World Health Organization by providing technical consultation, advice and training for strengthening laboratory diagnosis and detection, and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Technical support and training is tailored to the local context to inform guideline development for laboratory diagnostics, surveillance, genomics and bioinformatics, and to enhance laboratory capabilities to conduct diagnosis and surveillance of antimicrobial-resistant organisms. Surveillance support is developed and implemented in line with the WHO Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Surveillance System.

To help inform public health responses related to AMR, expert laboratory guidance on infection prevention and control and epidemiology is provided to monitor and report on antimicrobial resistant pathogens, through assistance with molecular characterisation, genomics, and epidemiological analysis and reporting.

Antimicrobial stewardship

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance supports the World Health Organization by providing guidance in the optimisation of the use of antimicrobials, through training and technical advice in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS).

Training programs are tailored and developed for pharmacists, infectious disease physicians, nurses and infection control practitioners based on local needs and context, including guidance for best practice decision-making processes on antibiotic use, as well as monitoring of interventions, such as prescribing and dispensing antibiotics. Using the Train-the-trainer approach, programs will provide opportunities to develop knowledge from local staff for the planning and implementation of antimicrobial stewardship activities.

Infection prevention and control

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance provides infection and prevention control support to Member States by establishing best practice policies, procedures and systems for monitoring selected healthcare associated infections through training and mentoring.
