Immunology

Updated: 13, Jan 2026

Immunology is the science of understanding how the body defends itself, exploring the intricate systems that protect us from infections, diseases and cancer.

At the Doherty Institute, immunology research is central to our mission of advancing human health. Our scientists are internationally recognised for their groundbreaking work in understanding the immune system and its role in fighting infectious diseases, cancer, and autoimmune conditions.

Our research spans a wide spectrum; from fundamental studies of immune cell behaviour to translational research aimed at developing next-generation vaccines and immunotherapies. Key areas of focus include: T cell biology (killer T cells, MAIT cells, NKT cells, and tissue-resident memory T cells), immune regulation and signalling pathways, host-pathogen interactions  and vaccine development and immune profiling.

We employ cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell transcriptomics, CRISPR gene editing, advanced imaging, and computational modelling to uncover the molecular mechanisms that drive immune responses. These insights are translated into real-world applications, including novel treatments for chronic infections, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.

Our immunology research is deeply relevant to today’s most pressing health challenges. It informs the development of vaccines and therapies for diseases including COVID-19, HIV, influenza, malaria, and hepatitis. Through collaborative efforts across specialised research groups, we are shaping the future of immunological science and improving clinical outcomes globally.
