Clinical research involves studying health and disease in people to develop new treatments, improve existing ones, and enhance patient outcomes. It includes clinical trials, observational studies, and translational research that bridges laboratory discoveries with real-world medical care.

Health systems research focuses on how healthcare is delivered, aiming to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and quality of services across hospitals and communities.

At the Doherty Institute, we combine these disciplines to drive innovation in infectious disease management. Our researchers lead clinical trials for a broad range of conditions including bacterial infections (tuberculosis and strep throat), blood-borne viruses (hepatitis B and C, and HIV), respiratory viruses (RSV, influenza and COVID-19) and sexually-transmitted infections (Chlamydia and gonorrhea, . Our experts work closely with hospitals, volunteer participants, patients, partners and the community to ensure our findings translate into better care.

Our clinician researchers have expertise in leading clinical trials, with a strong track record of designing and conducting both investigator-led and industry-sponsored studies that translate innovative research into improved treatments and outcomes for patients.

By integrating science with health system performance, the Doherty Institute is committed to advancing design care models that are effective, affordable and centred on patient needs.

The Vaccine Research Group conducts early and late phase clinical trials in outpatient settings, with expertise in both industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies. Their research focuses on exploring the effectiveness, antibody responses and safety of new vaccines in standard or novel schedules.

Operating within the Department of Infectious Diseases is the Clinical Trials Support Unit, established to promote, enhance and advance clinical trials and health services research in the department and across the Doherty Institute. Their vision is to be a leading clinical research hub for administering infectious disease trials in Australia, with a mission to empower researchers in undertaking both national and international interventional clinical trials and health research services.

Doherty Clinical Trials Limited has been established to deliver early phase studies for local and global clients. The purpose-built facility and team is dedicated to delivering innovative, safe and ethically-sound trials in a range of therapeutic areas, specialising in novel, early phase and human challenge clinical studies of the highest quality.
