Associate Professor Leon Caly has a long-standing interest in basic virology, spanning HIV-1 transmission as part of his PhD, to several post doctoral projects focussed on respiratory virus replication and host transcriptional modulation. Associate Professor Caly joined the Royal Melbourne Hospital's Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) in 2016 and established and leads their Translational Diagnostics Laboratory which is focussed on increasing the implementation of next generation sequencing and functinal genomics within public health diagnostic virology. Leon is the Doherty Institute High Containment Facility manager and works across the PC3 and PC4 facilities.
