Professor James McCluskey trained at the US National Institutes of Health (1983-87) and held positions at Monash University, Flinders University and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. His research on immune recognition has attracted a number of prizes. He led the establishment of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity; was director of 10 independent research institutes and CRCs. He was Deputy Vice Chancellor Research (2011-2023), Acting Provost (2022) and Assistant VC (2023) at The University of Melbourne. In 2024, he received a Melbourne Achiever Award from the Committee for Melbourne and the University of Melbourne Gold Medal for distinguished service.
