Avian influenza evolutionary ecology in Australia and Antarctica

Updated: 19, Nov 2025

In Australia, we are interested in understanding the dynamics of low pathogenicity avian influenza viruses in wild birds. Potential projects include exploring environmental surveillance and virus survival in the environments, analysis of reinfection dynamics in a small island population, and development of H5 assays to understand current antibody prevalence. In Antarctica we are interested in understanding the spread and impacts of high pathogenicity avian influenza on the unique Antarctica fauna. There is additional scope for testing Antarctic samples for other pathogens and subsequent virus discovery bioinformatic analysis.
