Dr Paula Cevaal is a post-doctoral scientist in the lab of Professor Sharon Lewin. She received her MSc training in The Netherlands, specialising in infectious diseases and immunology. She then spent a year doing youth advocacy work at AIDS2018, after which she completed a joint PhD in virology and nanomedicine. Her work focuses on developing non-viral vectors to efficiently deliver therapeutics to primary CD4+ T cells. Specifically, she led a new line of research pioneering lipid nanoparticles for the delivery of mRNA-based latency-reversing agents to the latent HIV reservoir. The overarching goal of her work is to take gene editing-related strategies to the clinic.

Lewin Group
The focus of the Lewin group is to understand why HIV infection persists on antiretroviral therapy and to develop new strategies to eliminate latency. The lab also researches factors that drive liver disease in HIV-hepatitis B virus co-infection. The lab is also actively involved in COVID in relation to pathogenesis, the use of primary tissue models, and developing therapeutics using gene editing strategies.
