Dr Janine Trevillyan is Head of Clinical Virology and HIV Services at Austin Health, and holds an honorary appointment at the Doherty Institute in the Department of Infectious Diseases. She is an infectious diseases physician and clinical researcher whose work focuses on understanding and preventing HIV-associated comorbidities and in particular cardiovascular disease. She completed a PhD through Monash University and then went on to a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles, Clinical AIDS Research and Education centre. She’s an active member of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group  and elected member of its inflammation transformative science group committee. Janine is currently investigating methods of reducing cardiovascular risk in people living with HIV.

  • Key Achievements
    • Janine is the recipient of a competitive National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) early career fellowship and was the Australian representative at the Young Physician Leaders program in Berlin, Germany. She has received multiple investigator and top researcher prizes from national and international societies and the Victorian Government Public Health Care Award for innovation as part of the Alfred Health Antimicrobial Stewardship team. Janine has published widely in the areas of clinical virology and HIV-associated co-morbidities, been invited to speak at numerous national and international conferences and is a key contributor to Australian HIV managemnet guidelines committees.

    • Lewin Group

      The focus of the Lewin group is to understand why HIV infection persists on antiretroviral therapy and to develop new strategies to eliminate latency. The lab also researches factors that drive liver disease in HIV-hepatitis B virus co-infection. The lab is also actively involved in COVID in relation to pathogenesis, the use of primary tissue models, and developing therapeutics using gene editing strategies.
