Dr Celine Gubser is a postdoctoral researcher in the Immunomodulation group within the laboratory of Professor Sharon Lewin. Her work focuses on novel immune modulating agents and their ability to boost HIV directed immune responses and eliminate latently infected cells. Celine accomplished her medical studies in 2011 and obtained her PhD at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 2015 where she studied the suppressive mechanisms of regulatory T cells and T cell tolerance under Professor Ed Palmer. There after she did a 2-year assignment as registrar in internal medicine at the University hospital Basel.

  • Key Achievements
    • Celine was awarded a Novartis research fellowship in 2018 to undertake her postdoctoral studies in HIV cure research. Her PhD work helped understand the molecular mechanism underlaying the affinity threshold for negative selection.* She further studied how peripheral tolerance is maintained by regulatory T cells showing that the strength of TCR stimulation determined the efficacy of regulatory T cell mediated suppression.

    Research Groups
    • Lewin Group

The focus of the Lewin group is to understand why HIV infection persists on antiretroviral therapy and to develop new strategies to eliminate latency. The lab also researches factors that drive liver disease in HIV-hepatitis B virus co-infection. The lab is also actively involved in COVID in relation to pathogenesis, the use of primary tissue models, and developing therapeutics using gene editing strategies.
