New technologies for scientific research have turned biological science into a data-driven profession. Daniel uses statistical and computational methods to derive insights from the mountains of data currently being generated in the study of disease. After studying bioinformatics at the University of Queensland, he moved to Melbourne and joined the Doherty Institute where he now works with the Computational Sciences Initiative (CSI) to analyse large sequencing datasets from other groups within the Institute. In CSI, Daniel is able to indulge his enthusiasm for communicating complex science and working with others to tackle big problems in health research.

Daniel is also completing a PhD with the Coin Lab where his current study focus is on the use machine learning to identify markers of disease in patients with undiagnosed illnesses.

The Coin Group develops genomic and transcriptomic tools to develop biomarkers for rapid characterization of disease state and prediction of drug susceptibility, with the aim of decreasing the time taken from hospital admission to administering the right treatment. We currently focus on infectious disease as well as cancer.
