Dr Michael Roche is a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Research Fellow in the Lewin/Cameron laboratory. Michael obtained his PhD from Monash University in the laboratory of Professor Paul Gorry at the Burnet Institute. Michael was then awarded an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship to join the lab of Professor Sharon Lewin where he now leads the Reservoir Virology group. The Reservoir Virology group focuses on understanding what helps HIV hide in the body. To do this, the group uses innovative molecular biology techniques to probe the type and function of viruses found in patients on long-term therapy.

  • Key Achievements
    • Michael was awarded the Mollie Holman Medal from Monash University in 2013 for best doctoral thesis in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. In 2014, Michael was the Frank Fenner Awardee for highest ranked NHMRC Early Career Fellowship in the biomedical or public health category. Michael has been a co-investigator on several Australian Centre for Hepatitis and HIV (ACH2) research grants, and recently was awarded his first primary investigator grant from the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR).
