Professor Monica Slavin leads the Immunocompromised Host Infection service at Royal Melbourne Hospital and is Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac). Monica is current Chair of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases Mycoses Interest Group and established and has chaired its antifungal guideline writing committee since 2004. Monica contributes to multiple national and international committees for education, research and development of guidelines for treatment and prevention of opportunistic infections and to standardise definitions and diagnosis of fungal infections. Monica is Vice President of the International Immunocompromised Host Society, which promotes education and research. 

  • Key Achievements
    • Monica has over 170 peer-reviewed publications and conducts clinical trials and epidemiologic studies of opportunistic infections. She recently led a National Health and Medical Research Council funded study of new approaches to diagnosing serious fungal infections in haematology and transplant patients. Monica supervises PhD students studying immune profiling for infection risk (with Dr Marc Pellegrini, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and Associate Professor Simon Harrison, Peter Mac), improving management of antibiotic allergies in cancer patients (with Professor Lyndsay Grayson, the Austin Hospital), optimising antifungal therapy (with Dr David Kong from Monash University, Department of Pharmacy) and improving management of fever and neutropenia in children (with Associate Professor Karin Thursky).
