Sebastian joined the Doherty Institute in early 2019 as an Australian Research Council DECRA fellow. He previously held a McKenzie fellowship at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Melbourne. He obtained his PhD and conducted postdoctoral work at the University of Sydney under the supervision of Professor Edward Holmes and Professor Simon Ho. His work at the University of Sydney involved understanding the timescales over which viruses and bacteria evolve. At present he is developing approaches to leverage genome data with epidemiological information in outbreaks of viruses and bacteria.

  • Key Achievements
    • Sebastian has been awarded several competitive fellowship and grant schemes, including a McKenzie fellowship from the University of Melbourne, a Discovery Early Career Award from the Australian Research Council, and a National Health and Medical Research Council grant. He is an author of over 57 peer-reviewed articles, with over 1,400 citations in eight years. Sebastian’s PhD thesis was awarded the Faculty of Science Postgraduate  Research Prize form the University of Sydney and the D.G. Catcheside Prize form the Genetics Society of Australasia for the best thesis in 2016.
