Doherty Institute Director elected to IAS Governing Council

Doherty Institute Director, Professor Sharon Lewin has been elected to the International AIDS Society (IAS) Governing Council following an election open to all IAS members.

Representing Asia and the Pacific Islands, Professor Lewin will join the rest of the council at the 21st International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016) to be introduced to IAS members. The new Council will take office on 22 July at the closing of the International AIDS Conference, AIDS 2016.

“I am thrilled to have been elected to the Governing Council to represent the Asia Pacific region where there are some unique challenges in the region for managing HIV – including rising rates of HIV infection in key populations such as men who have sex with men and transgender women and high rates of stigma and discrimination,” Professor Lewin said.

“I will also play a key role in continuing the great work IAS have done in promoting greater engagement, funding for and developing a global scientific strategy in HIV cure research.”

The IAS Governing Council is the executive body of the IAS, the world’s largest association of HIV professionals with over 10,000 members from over 180 countries. It has financial oversight and responsibility for organising the International AIDS Conference, the largest global health conference, and IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention.
