Modelling to support COVID-19 preparedness and response in Australia
Mathematical modelling, once considered by many to be an obscure academic exercise, has become an intense focus of public interest as we navigate our response to COVID-19. At a time of great uncertainty, models are an important tool used by government to plan and respond to an emergency. But models are often misinterpreted as sources of truth that provide unique insights into the future. We will discuss the use of models to support Australia’s initial COVID-19 preparedness and response strategy, and their ongoing role in evaluating the effectiveness of interventions to ‘flatten the curve’.
