Centre for Antibiotic Allergy and Research

Overview

Professor Jason Trubiano’s research group, the Centre for Antibiotic Allergy and Research, aims to define the impacts of antibiotic allergy and benefits of antibiotic allergy testing on patient care and health services. The group has validated several point-of-care penicillin allergy decision tools, which are currently being deployed in health services interventions or international multicentre randomised control trials, led by the group’s PhD candidates. This work seeks to develop sustainable drug allergy programs that improve antibiotic utilisation and drive antimicrobial stewardship policy. The group has recently commenced work on a national penicillin allergy database (https://antibioticallergy.org.au/naan) via the National Antibiotic Allergy Network to assess the Australian impact of hospital de-labelling programs.

The group also works in the translational space of drug allergy, investigating the epidemiology, immunopathogenesis, genomic predictors and diagnostics in Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions – A heterogenous group of T-cell mediated drug hypersensitivities. The group has led the development of novel T-cell diagnostics and provided the roadmap for antibiotic pharmacogenomic discovery, in collaboration with colleagues at Vanderbilt University. The group leads the Australasian Registry of Severe Cutaneous Reactions (AUS-SCAR) – a national biobank for SCAR.
