The WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, located within the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) in Melbourne is part of the World Health Organization Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS). Established in 1952, this global network monitors the continual evolution of influenza viruses, aiming to lessen the disease’s impact through vaccines that target the most currently circulating strains.
Alongside WHO Collaborating Centres in Atlanta, Beijing, London, and Tokyo, the Melbourne-based Centre plays a key role in analysing influenza viruses currently circulating in human populations worldwide. This data informs WHO recommendations for the composition of annual seasonal influenza vaccines for both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In addition, the Centre conducts research, provides training, and supports regional capacity-building efforts related to influenza.
