The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), based at the Doherty Institute, is a leading public health laboratory in Australia, and a core component of national and regional public health responses to infectious diseases.
VIDRL provides comprehensive virology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and mycobacteriology services including, specialised testing, outbreak investigations, and disease surveillance. VIDRL holds several national reference laboratory designations (enteroviruses, measles, viral haemorrhagic fevers, and smallpox) and maintains strong international connections, including multiple WHO Collaborating Centres and Regional Reference Laboratory designations, as well as laboratory membership with the WHO Coronavirus Network (CoViNet) and Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
We work in partnership with governments including the Victorian Department of Health and the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, to support the health and wellbeing of Victorians and Australians. VIDRL actively collaborates with academic institutions, healthcare providers, industry partners, and global health organisations. This diverse network enables VIDRLus to make significant contributions to public health, research, and infectious disease testing on a global scale.
