The Guidance Group, based at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Doherty Institute, develops digital tools to improve patient care and address antimicrobial resistance. With over 15 years of leadership in antimicrobial stewardship, the group supports safe antibiotic use through its clinical decision support system, Guidance, used in more than 50 hospitals. This platform helps clinicians make informed treatment decisions, reduce drug-resistant infections, and meet national standards.
The group also leads the National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey (NAPS), used by over 2,000 hospitals, aged care homes, and health services across Australia and internationally. NAPS provides essential data that drives local improvements and informs national reports, shaping policy and clinical guidelines.
In partnership with the National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship (NCAS) and other leading organisations, the Guidance Group ensures its programs remain evidence-based and current. Its work continues to influence prescribing practices and improve patient outcomes across diverse healthcare settings.
Looking ahead to 2030, the Guidance Group’s strategy includes upgrading its platforms for stronger security and electronic medical records (EMR) system integration, expanding into community and underserved settings, applying artificial intelligence to enhance data insights, and strengthening global partnerships. Its mission is to equip healthcare providers with the tools and knowledge to deliver high-quality care and preserve antimicrobial effectiveness for future generations.
