Cumming Global Centre for Pandemic Therapeutics

The Governance Board is responsible for setting the strategy for, and oversight of the management of the operations, business and other affairs for the Cumming Global Centre for Pandemic Therapeutics. The Inaugural Chair is Professor Jim Angus.

Professor James Angus (Chair)

Professor James Angus AO FAA FAHMS (Hon) is the inaugural Chair of the Cumming Global Centre for Pandemic Therapeutics (Cumming Centre).

Professor Angus has had a distinguished career as an academic and biomedical researcher, particularly in the fields of pharmacology and cardiovascular disease, working at many of Victoria's leading research institutes.

Professor Angus is an Honorary Professorial Fellow and Emeritus Professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne, and was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences from 2003 to 2013. He has also chaired and been a member of governance and scientific advisory boards to many Australian health and medical research institutions.

Professor Angus was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday list in 2010 for distinguished service to biomedical research, particularly in the fields of pharmacology and cardiovascular disease, and he was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003 for services to pharmacology and the community. He was sworn in as the fifteenth Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria in November 2021.

Professor James McCluskey

Professor James McCluskey is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Melbourne, appointed in March 2011 and led the development of the Doherty Institute. Prior to this he was the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research Partnerships and Chair of Microbiology and Immunology. 
James trained in Perth as a physician and pathologist. He spent four years at the National Institutes of Health in the USA. On returning to Australia in 1987 he worked at Monash University until 1991 before joining Flinders University and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.
 James joined the University of Melbourne in 1997 and has an international reputation for his research in basic and clinical immunology and is recognised for his leadership in the field of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) and the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). He has consulted for the Australian Red Cross for more than 20 years and is Editor-in-Chief of the international immunogenetics journal, Tissue Antigens. He is on the Board of Directors of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Florey Neuroscience Institutes, Bionics Institute and is Chair of the Nossal Institute Council and the Board of Nossal Institute Limited.

    Scientific Advisory Board

    The interim Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) comprises of three members from the Doherty Institute SAB and external members as needed. A permanent SAB will be established within the first 12-18 months.
