Dr Timothy Hinks is a Welcome Trust postdoctoral fellow in Professor James McCluskey’s laboratory. He is trained as a respiratory physician with an interest in the diagnosis and treatment of lung infections and asthma. Tim usually works as an NHS consultant at University Hospital Southampton in the UK, and as an Associate Professor within the University of Southampton School of Medicine. He has been recruited to the Doherty Institute on a two year Wellcome Trust Fellowship to investigate the role of MAIT cells in the lung.

  • Key Achievements
    • Tim undertook his preclinical training in Cambridge, including an MA project investigating muscle function in Huntington’s disease. He completed his clinical training and residencies in Oxford before working as an Honorary Registrar with Ajit Lalvani in the Nuffield Department of Medicine investigating the application of T cell-based technology to the diagnosis of tuberculosis. In 2007, Tim moved to the University of Southampton to complete his specialist training in respiratory medicine and undertook a PhD in translational clinical research funded by the NIHR and the Wellcome Trust investigating the roles of innate and adaptive T cell subsets in human asthma.

      MAIT cells respond to precursors of riboflavin, allowing the immune system to detect microbial invaders. The McCluskey group aims to understand their role in infection/inflammatory conditions and is tackling this question using mouse models, human tissue analysis and structural biology.
