Dr Megan Crane is a Research Fellow with Professor Sharon Lewin. She obtained her PhD in 2007 at Monash University in Immunology and has since been leading the Hepatitis B Virus Research group in Sharon’s group. Dr Crane currently co-supervises a PhD student, infectious diseases physician Dr Kasha Singh and supervises a research assistant part time. In the last five years she has mentored one PhD candidate and two Melbourne University Biomedical Science Honours students. The Hepatitis B Research group focuses on determining the drivers of liver disease progression in people with both HIV and hepatitis B. Their aim is to determine the direct and indirect effects of HIV infection on the liver.

  • Key Achievements
    • Megan is the only Australian recipient of the prestigious American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) Mathilde Krim Basic Biomedical Research Fellowship. In her nine years in Sharon’s group she has established a productive research career with 12 publications in top ranking discipline specific journals in the field including Journal of Infectious Diseases and the Journal of Virology, has given three invited presentations and secured over $880,000 in research funding. Megan is Chair of the organising committee for the Melbourne HIV Exchange (mHIVE) - a monthly seminar series for HIV researchers across the state of Victoria.

      The main focus of the Lewin-Cameron laboratory is to understand why HIV infection persists on antiretroviral therapy, to develop new strategies to eliminate latency and to define the biological determinants of immune reconstitution and factors that drive liver disease in HIV-hepatitis B virus co-infection.
